Between Landscape and Memory
|
|
The works exist at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Landscape does not appear here as a representation of a specific place, but as an inner space – as memory, mood, or perception.
Horizons dissolve, layers of colour overlap, and traces of earlier states of the image remain visible. The paintings evolve through a process of reworking, removing, and reformulating.
From this open pictorial world, animals emerge: a dog, a horse, or merely their outlines. They do not appear as narrative figures, but as fleeting apparitions – as if visible for a brief moment before merging back into the landscape.
The tension in these works arises from the interplay of stillness and movement, surface and line, visibility and dissolution. Colour becomes the true carrier of atmosphere, describing not so much nature as sensation.
The result is a body of work that depicts no specific places, but rather landscapes of memory, where perception, time, and nature merge into an open, poetic visual language.

Her many years of work as a filmmaker have profoundly shaped the way she looks at landscapes and people. In her films, she observes regions in transition, tells the stories of their inhabitants, and reveals how memories, stories, and nature are interwoven.
This experience is also reflected in her painting. Her works do not depict specific places, but rather condensed landscapes of memory. Layers of colour, horizons, and fleeting animal forms come together to create poetic pictorial spaces in which nature is not documented, but experienced. As in her films, Sylvia von Miller directs her gaze towards what is essential – traces, moods, and the invisible connections between things.
