Darda’s works do not emerge from the direct depiction of a subject. Instead, they develop through a process of applying, layering, removing, and revealing. Paint meets paper and found materials; cracks, abrasion, splashes of paint, and irregular edges remain visible, becoming independent elements of the composition.

It is precisely the use of fragments that lends the works their particular tension. A piece of printed paper, a textile texture, or an apparently incidental fragment of material points to its original function and thus brings its own history into the work. Through painterly intervention, this found element is simultaneously transformed and placed within a new context.

Darda moves between abstraction and a recurring sense of figuration. Forms evoke landscapes, organic structures, or remnants without allowing themselves to be reduced to a single, definitive interpretation. The paintings are not representations of specific places or objects. Rather, they function as open pictorial spaces in which memories and associations emerge through color, material, and form.

Particularly striking is Darda’s use of color. Vibrant yellows and blues stand alongside earthy shades of brown, grey, and white. Broad fields of color are traversed by fine lines, splashes, and material disruptions. This creates a lively surface that feels neither closed nor smooth, but retains traces of its own making.

Darda’s paintings thus possess an almost archaeological quality: they seem to uncover something without ever fully revealing what has been found. Layer by layer, a pictorial reality emerges in which the past, the found, and the newly created are interwoven.

Alfred Darda’s works do not tell a specific story. Rather, they make visible how history inscribes itself in traces, fragments, and surfaces.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore these open pictorial spaces up close and to trace the transitions between object and abstraction, chance and deliberate intervention, destruction and new beginnings.
