Our view of today's landscape is often fleeting. Forgetting and repression dominate our perception of everyday places, which is driven by speed and the pursuit of goals.
In his works, Manuel Rumpf deals with the atmospheres of modern landscapes, which are shaped more than ever by man, which have only come into being because we live in them.
The landscapes of the present are man-made. Transport routes, commercial zones, industrial facilities, and urban fringe areas arise from functional necessities and shape the environment of many people. They serve as the infrastructure of everyday life, yet are rarely perceived as designed or meaningful spaces. Their function is oriented toward efficiency rather than representation or identification.
These places often appear inconspicuous, as they possess no traditional value as sites of dwelling or lingering. They are spaces of passage and transitional zones—uninhabited, yet by no means unused. Our view of them is fleeting: we pass through them on the way to work or glimpse them from a train window. Although they seem incidental, they possess a distinct atmosphere. Light conditions, emptiness, and traces of human use form a scenery that extends beyond mere function.
It is this atmosphere that Manuel Rumpf engages with in his painting. The first step in his creative process is photographic exploration, which serves less as documentary recording than as an immediate experience of the place. Light, mood, and spatial impact are central to this approach. In the painterly realization, Rumpf translates these impressions into oil on canvas or ink on paper. His mode of representation deliberately avoids excessive precision, instead emphasizing the fleeting and indeterminate nature of memory. Glazed layers of color create depth and space, sharpening or dissolving contours. His works depict deserted environments, often in artificial or diffuse light—sometimes as quiet scenes, sometimes perceived in motion.
